We May Be Small But Our God is a Great And Mighty God

Let’s talk about why small is mighty.

Most people have big aspirations and want to get there fast, right? Big house. Big land or property. Big business. Big amount of money in the bank. Big position in a company. In general, big things usually possess power and considered as great.

Truth be told, people tend to measure success through acquiring huge amount of wealth or through seeking career advancement opportunity whether in sports, politics, education, and entertainment. Upon achieving this, they become somebody and being favored by most people .

In sports for instance, we give credits to basketball players who are big and tall as their jaw-dropping dunk win the heart of spectators. They can play better defensively and are not being intimated by smaller players. In entertainment industries, famous wrestler and actor Dwayne Johnson (known as The Rock)  is well-known because of his big bulging muscle.

On the other hand, the small, tiny, littlewhatever you call themis considered a nobody and frail. Remember a time when your classmate is being bullied by bigger kids at school because he or she is so small or skinny?

In real-life it’s easy for the ordinary small people like uneducated, poor, and widow to feel insignificant, powerless, and not being recognized due to limited opportunities. And worst of all, they are prone to different forms of abuse.

But today, let me tell you why small is mighty with God.

A small shepherd boy

The Bible is full of stories how small people are big in God’s sight.

Remember a small shepherd boy who grew up in a small village? To his siblings, he’s just probably like an errand boy. He couldn’t even carry the helmet or sword offered by King Saul.

On the other hand, Goliath is mighty and powerful who came from Philistine army. Everyone knows he’s a formidable opponent as his height is over 9 feet tall (1 Samuel 17:4). He’s definitely taller than Guinness Book of World Records’ Sultan Kosen of Turkey (8 ft 2.8 in tall).

Compared with Goliath, David is just a nobody, right? Wrong!

Because a shepherd boy defeated the mighty giant as the strength of the Lord was behind him.

A small boy who had 5 loaves and 2 small fish

Who says the five loaves and two fish can feed 5,000 people (John 6:5-13)?  Certainly, a simple lunch is not enough to feed the multitudes.

In fact Philip told to Jesus, “It would take more than half a year’s wages to buy enough bread for each one to have a bite!” (John 6:7). Interestingly, Andrew spoke up about a little boy who had five small barley loaves and two small fish.

We know the rest of the story. Jesus performed a miracle when the boy gave his small lunch to Jesus and feed the entire multitude.

You may be small, but God is big!

Do you feel no one cares about you? Here’s another one.

Imagine and  think how big the universe is.  They say that it’s so big we can’t really measure it. And as I think about how our solar system is so tiny compared to the Milky Way, I can’t help but realize that our Planet Earth is just a tiny speck in relation even to that sun, which is just a speck in the galaxy, which is just a speck in the universe.

Why would God bother with a tiny creature like you?

No wonder King David once said, “When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is man that you are mindful of him, and the son of man that you care for him?” (Psalm 8:3).

And yet the Bible tells us that God is so great that He is concerned about even the smallest part of His creation—including us. Jesus put it this way: “Even the very hairs of your head are all numbered” (Matthew 10:30). What a very encouraging words!

Remember, God is mighty!

Do you feel hopeless when your faith is being tested due to serious health problems like cancer, leukemia, or diabetes? Remember, God is mighty!

Do you feel small and insignificant when you are being maltreated at work? May be someone is trying to put you down because he or she is envy of you?  Remember, God is mighty!

Do you feel depressed because your husband is becoming physically and emotionally abusive? Remember, God is mighty!

Do you feel like just a nobody when your son is getting addicted to drugs and he’s no longer listening to your advise? Remember, God is mighty!

Have you doubted His concern about what you are going through? Remember, God is mighty!

Final thoughts

Why small is mighty? Because when you get discouraged or feel hopeless, it’s a perfect time for God to display His power. Because God chose to use the nobodies of the world as they are receptive to His calling. Because they are willing to use their small talent for a bigger purpose and to fulfill His plan that God has entrusted them.

Being on the right side of the Lord makes you stronger than anything.

Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go. —Joshua 1:9
