Two foreign language teachers arrested over face mask fraud
Authorities arrested two foreign language teachers on Tuesday for their alleged involvement in a face mask fraud that cost investors about 27 million baht.
According to Pol Maj Gen Jirapop Puridet, commander of the Crime Suppression Division, Filipino Mr. Romo Jr, 27, was apprehended by the authorities in Maha Sarakham’s Kantharawichai district, while 38-year-old Asaka Mbah from Cameroon was arrested in Nong Nakham district of Khon Kaen.
The two suspects are allegedly part of a gang that claimed in March to be a large manufacturer of surgical masks, Bangkok Post reported.
In order to make their business look legit, the two foreign language teachers built a fake website with a company name and logo and false procurement and transport documents. They offered surgical masks for sale in large amounts, the report added.
They soon tickled the buyers fancy who then purchased the masks amounting 27 million baht and transferred the money straight to the gang’s bank accounts.
Pol Maj Gen Jirapop revealed that during the investigation, another person was just about to make payment for an order, but detectives managed to warn the victim off.
The authorities targeted them after the earlier arrest of a Thai woman who was also part of the fraud, Jirapop said.
