Surfer Roger Casugay is Philippines’ flag bearer for SEA Games closing
Pinoy surfer Roger Casugay is going to be the Philippines flag bearer for the closing ceremonies of the 30th Southeast Asian Games.
“These Games are not only about medals. It is about character, resilience, love for one another and shoring up the faith of the person next to you, something that Casugay has exemplified,” Philippine Sports Commission Chairman William Ramirez said in a statement.
Casugay went viral when he rescued Indonesian surfer Arip Nurhidayat when the latter broke his leash during the men’s longboard preliminaries. His heroic act received a commendation from Indonesian President Joko Widodo.
“Winning the competition and upholding sport is important, but humanity is above all, said Widodo on Twitter today, December 9.
Surfer Roger Casugay who netizens labeled as someone with a heart of gold eventually snatched the gold medal in the event.
Apart from being the flag bearer, PSC will also offer Casugay a special plaque of recognition and a cash incentive for his heroic act on Friday.
“I will include Roger in our awarding in Malacañang to meet the President,” Ramirez said.
The closing ceremony of the 3oth SEA Games is on Wednesday, December 11, in the New Clark City Athletics Stadium.
