BANGKOK, Thailand – A Spanish national was convicted to death Friday by a criminal court in Bangkok for killing a fellow Spaniard in January last year, The Nation reported.

The report said, “Ratchadapisek Criminal Court ruled that there was strong scientific evidence to convict Artur Segarra Princep for the murder of fellow Spanish national David Bernat.”

According to the report, Segarra was charged with detaining and torturing Bernat at his apartment in the Huai Kwang area for 10 days between January 20 and 30 last year.

The report further revealed that Segara forced to obtain Bernat’s cash card PIN number, which he used to steal over Bt700,000. Segarra then force-fed the 40-year-old Bernat a cocktail of drugs until he passed out. Then he covered the victim’s head with a plastic bag and duct tape to suffocate him.

Following the victim’s death, Segarra dismembered the frozen body and dumped them in several spots along Chao Praya River.

The report said Segarra denied committing the heinous crime but the court ruled that he committed the murder for Bernat’s savings worth tens of millions of baht.

Aside from murder, Segarra was also convicted of falsifying documents to transfer Bt730,000 from Bernat’s account to his own.
