Should you wear face masks while exercising?

Even during a pandemic crisis, being physically active or living a healthy lifestyle is important. However, while some places where fitness centers are gradually returning to normal operation, the question we should be asking is: Should we wear face masks?

There is no doubt putting on a face mask may help prevent people who may have COVID-19 from spreading the virus to others especially in public places. But what if you’re planning to go to fitness centres or health clubs inside the mall to exercise with others?

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), people should NOT wear masks while exercising as masks may reduce the ability to breathe comfortably. It’s obvious indeed you wouldn’t be able to breathe properly with a mask on.

Sweat can make the mask become wet more quickly which makes it difficult to breathe and promotes the growth of microorganisms. The important preventive measure during exercise is to maintain a physical distance of at least one meter from others.

Also, always remember to follow the mandate of the local government and the specific instruction from the fitness centre to ensure your safety.
