President Joko Widodo of Indonesia showed his appreciation to Pinoy surfer Roger Casugay for saving Indonesian athlete Arip Nurhidayat who was swept away by waves during SEA Games preliminaries.
“Winning the competition and upholding sport is important, but humanity is above all, said Widodo on Twitter today, 9 December.
“My appreciation for Roger Casugay, a Filipino surfer who gave up the golden opportunity to save an Indonesian athlete who fell in the race,” the Indonesia president added.
Casugay’s heroic act went viral on social media; with netizens praising him for his heart of gold.
On Sunday, 8 December, Casugay snatched the gold medal in the longboard open event against fellow Filipino surfer Rogelio Esquivel at Kahuna beach in San Juan, La Union.
