PHITSANULOK, Thailand – A Filipino teacher in Phitsanulok received the “Outstanding Asian EFL Teacher 2019” award from the International Society of Teachers, Administrators and Researchers (ISTAR) during the World Interdisciplinary Research Congress on Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages on Saturday, November 16 at Phra Nakhorn Rajahbat University, Bangkok, Thailand.

Mr. Juan Carlo Antonio, who is from Vigan, Ilocos Sur, is currently teaching English at Naresuan University Demonstration School in Phitsanulok, Thailand.

The award-giving body, International Society of Teachers, Administrators and Researchers (ISTAR), honors teachers, administrators and researchers for their contribution to the academic field. It is co-hosted by the Asian Association for Academic Integrity, Asian Society of Teachers for Research and Philippine Association of Institutions for Research.

In an interview with Pinoy Legacy, Mr. Antonio said his leadership and his community service made him stood out from among the pool of nominees.

“It was quite tough to be nominated because I knew that it would be a battle of academic backgrounds, research publications, administrative functions,” Mr. Antonio said.

“My service and my leadership journey with the Saint Nicholas Church Foreign Community made it extra special. From spearheading of humanitarian activities to the mountains of Phitsanuok and Petchabun down to different causes. I believe that an outstanding teacher should not only be confined in the walls of the classroom but someone who responds to the call of the times now. Thus, we become agents of change,” he added.

Mr. Donato was nominated by Mr. Joey Gazmen of Valaya Alongkorn Rajahbat University and was endorsed by Ajarn Wiwansa, English Department Head of Naresuan University Demonstration School; Ms. Leah Doysabas, Saint Nicholas Church Foreign Community (SNCFC) Adviser; and Rev. Father Ronnie Torres, OMI, Assistant Parish Priest, St. Nicholas Church.

The award-giving body selection committee includes Asst. Prof. Rommel V. Tabula, chairperson of International Society of Teachers, Administrators and Researchers (ISTAR); Dr. Genaro V. Japos, President of Philippine Association of Institutions for Research; and Dr. Nenita B. Nagarit, Deputy Quality Management Representative of Philippine Association of Colleges and Universities Commission on Accreditation.
