Financial security is one of the main reasons for migration for most Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs). According to Jun Amparo, a financial blogger and author based in Thailand, most OFWs are struggling financially due to the following reasons: they don’t treat savings as an expense, failure to define asset versus liability, getting involved in investment scams, they become a milking cow and have no retirement plans, limited knowledge on how to invest, and lack of emergency fund and financial goals.

Last June 14, 2019, Jun Amparo met with Undersecretary Claro Arellano of the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) at his office in Intramuros Manila, Philippines. The meeting was coordinated by the Office of the President Appointment Office to discuss the financial education among the OFWs. Amparo is the author of “OMG OFW’s Money is Gone: Practical Tips on How to Be Wise with Your Hard-earned Money.”

During the meeting, they discussed how the OMG personal finance book can be integrated into the financial literacy projects and programs initiated by DOLE.  In addition, the proposal is aiming to request an endorsement letter from the Office of the President and make the OMG book available in Philippine embassies. Because an OFW deserves financial freedom and peace of mind, Amparo believes education is the best weapon to combat financial illiteracy.

After the said meeting, Amparo headed to A.V.B. Printing Press, a publishing company located at Maceda Street, Sampaloc Manila and met Jacquilyn B. Javier, the Managing Director, to discuss the agreement and how the book will be available at the National Book Store nationwide.

Jun Amparo founded the Richly Blessed Today, a blog about financial education dedicated to OFWs and their families and is one of the co-founders of The Pinoy Legacy, a Filipino online magazine in Thailand. Aside from the personal finance book, Amparo will be releasing his second book about marriage this coming July which is very useful for OFWs, especially for most husbands who are working abroad.
