MANILA — For the first time in 42 years, the Philippine men’s volleyball team will be vying for the gold medal following their win against powerhouse Thailand on Sunday at the PhilSports Arena.

The Philippines and Thailand played 5 sets; 17-25 (first set), 25-20 (second set), 23-25 (3rd set), 27-25 (4th set), 17-15 (5th set).

Bryan Bagunas (23 attacks, two blocks, and two aces) and Marck Espejo (19 attacks) led the Pinoy spikers to victory; upsetting the defending champion Thailand with their powerful attacks.

The Filipino spikers will go up against Indonesia to battle for the gold.

During the preliminaries on December 6, Indonesia broke the Philippines’ hearts by winning 3 straight sets.

The last time the Philippine men’s volleyball team played in the finals was in 1997 against Burma (now Myanmar). Burma won the gold with the Philippines settling for silver.
