Filipinas defeat Thailand, 3-0: First AFF Trophy
MANILA — The Philippine women’s national football team made history on Sunday night at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium.
Filipinas bagged the gold after defeating Thailand, 3-0, in the finals of the 2022 AFF Women’s Championship to win their first ever international trophy.
Thousands of spectators celebrated the win by singing and waving the Philippine flag. This is the Philippines’ revenge against Thailand, which beat them 1-0 in the group stage.
During the match, Jessica Cowart headed in Tahnai Annis’ delivery from a corner kick.
Katrina Guillou added another goal for the Philippines in the 20th minute.
Although Thailand dominated possession in the latter stages of the first half, they struggled to reach the final third.
The crowd was sent into a frenzied celebration when Sarina Bolden scored in the 90th minute.
It’s the latest achievement by a team that has already made history several times this year, starting in February when they secured a berth to next year’s FIFA Women’s World Cup.
