Filipino science teacher in Thailand joins science training in the US
Samut Sakorn – From 3,000 or so applicants coming from 35 countries and 45 American states, only around 200+ were luckily selected through an extensive qualification procedures and application process of Honeywell. One of the lucky ones is Elmar Rubio, a Filipino science teacher in Thailand.
Rubio, 33, of Calategas in Narra, Palawan, is a science teacher in the “Gifted Program” focusing in math and science at Anuban Samutsakhon School. He was one of the two teachers and the only Filipino science teacher in Thailand selected to attend the annual Honeywell Educators at Space Academy (Hesa) programme at the US Space and Rocket Centre (USSRC) in Huntsville, Alabama on June 14-18, 2018.

According to Rubio, his appreciation in science and approach in teaching the subject greatly improved. It opened a myriad of opportunities for him to create lessons that cater to the needs of his students.
“The experience with Honeywell is one of the best things in my entire teaching profession,” he said.
“Upgrading, refreshing and bringing the STEM education to our (Thai) Learners has the best part to offer such as robotics, astronomy, technology, engineering and mathematics. These things totally inspired and highly motivated me to bring back all the new and acquired knowledge to my classroom setting, including my experience to a diverse culture from science and maths teachers around the world, the spirit of camaraderie among my team “COLUMBUS”, as well as new ideas from my teammates from other countries and States in the US,” Rubio added.
“We’re thrilled to continue our long partnership with Honeywell to bring teachers to learn and grow at our facility in Alabama,” said Dr Deborah Barnhart, CEO at USSRC. “The opportunity to help these teachers ignite their students’ passion in space, science and technology is one we at USSRC look forward to each year.”
When asked if the training and opportunity to join Honeywell won’t be a problem for Filipinos in Thailand who don’t earn much but wish to join the program, Rubio happily told Pinoy Legacy that it was an all-expense paid by Honeywell. “Everything was paid by Honeywell as part of the scholarship program during the five-day intensive training. If I was able to do it, I believe you can too,” said Rubio.
