Petecio bested Russian boxer Liudmila Vorontsove at the latter’s turf in Ulan-Ude, Russia.
Despite having the hometown advantage, the Russian boxer found it hard to outclass Peticio in the women’s featherweight division.
The decision was split, but the Filipino boxer Nesthy Petecio solidified her win after delivering clearer and more solid blows.
Scores of 30-27, 30-27 and 29-28 in favor of Petecio were given by the three judges, while the other two gave the Russian 30-27 and 29-28.
“Nesthy deserved the win not only because she fought brilliantly, but also because she sacrificed so much for this,” said Ricky Vargas, Association of Boxing Alliances of the Philippines (ABAP) president.
