2 Nigerian nationals nabbed over romance scam
Two Nigerian nationals were arrested in Phuket for alleged involvement in a so-called romance scam.
Police authorities identified the two men as Nkemakolam Benson Ugonna, 21, and Osuchukwu Chukwuemeka Malachy, 19.
According to the police, the suspects post profiles of good-looking men on Facebook to strike up conversations with women in search of foreign partners.
The suspects then lure the women into believing they really existed and win their trust. After a while, the suspects then ask their victims to exchange names and addresses with them.
Following the exchange of names and whereabouts, the scammers would trick the clueless victims into believing they had some valuable items for them.
They would then ask the women into transferring money to them as tax payment for the supposed items.
Bangkok Post reported that Patong Police acted on the arrests upon request by the Songkhla immigration police to track down the two suspects.
After further investigation, the two suspects were arrested at a hotel in Patong area and were charged with overstaying and suspected involvement in a romance scam.
